Zy's first Halloween

I decided to get Zy into the spirit this year... so here's a picture of both of our kids ready to go Trick-or-Treating!

(For some reason, this post is attracting a lot of nasty spam comments... so I'm turning off comments on this post. If you are family/friends who want to comment, feel free to leave your note on the previous or following post. Thanks.)

Prenatal appointment

Another quick appointment in the city today. Met with a new student, too - the PA student was done last week.

38 Weeks

This week's ticker: I'm at least 7 lbs & if I decide to stay in here, my fingersnails will need to be clipped!

How your baby's growing: Your baby has really fattened up. She likely weighs between 6 and 7 1/2 pounds now (boys tend to be slightly heavier than girls), and she's probably between 19 and 20 inches long. She has a firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test with your pinky! Her organs are fully developed and in place, but her lungs and brain — though developed enough for her to function now — will continue to mature right through childhood.

Prenatal appointment

Good appointment yesterday - very quick as it was a busy day and I was "squeezed in."

37 Weeks

This week's ticker: I'm over 6 lbs & almost ready to come out even though my brain & lungs are still growing.

How your baby's growing: Congratulations! Your pregnancy is now considered full term — meaning your baby is developmentally ready to handle life outside the womb. (Babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 weeks are post-term.) Your baby probably weighs a little over 6 pounds at this point and measures between 19 and 20 inches, head to heel.

36 Weeks

This week's ticker: I'm around 19 inches tall, weigh at least 6 lbs, & gain more than half an ounce each day!

How your baby's growing: Your baby is still putting on the pounds — about an ounce a day. She now weighs almost 6 pounds and is a little less than 19 inches long. She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the creamy substance that covered and protected her skin during its submersion in amniotic fluid. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, which will stay in her bowels until birth. This blackish mixture, called meconium, will become her first bowel movement.

Assorted

I keep thinking of things to write and putting it off until tomorrow's update. But I know that I have trouble remembering my name from minute to minute these days (and, earlier, I forgot the word "sandals" - like, totally couldn't think of it). So I thought I should do these while I think of it.

Dropping, 37/38 week appointment, Zy's blanket...

Prenatal appointment

Another appointment. An odd appointment, but it was a good one as far as all the stats go.

ATTENTION - PLEASE READ!!!

It has been our plan this entire pregnancy to not share our actual due date with anyone other than our immediate family. Now, that doesn't exactly work out since I LOVE the ticker at the top of the page... and that does a daily count down for you.

With Robert's pregnancy, I went "overdue" by 9 days. That wouldn't be that big of a deal if it weren't for the daily calls, emails and comments from friends, neighbors, church members, grocery store employees, etc. I went a little crazy. I refused to answer the phone unless we knew it was one of our parents, I stopped checking email, I wouldn't answer the door, I wouldn't go to the store.

I have no idea when Zy is coming - I don't believe in scheduling birth by induction or c-section without serious complications playing into the mix (which thankfully we aren't experiencing). We've been telling everyone that I'm due mid- to late-Novemeber... that the baptism is scheduled for Thanksgiving and we're expecting that Thanksgiving is plenty past my due date to ensure that s/he'll be here by then. That is still my official answer to anyone who asks when we're due.

So if I go overdue again and the baby is ready to fall off the ticker like the little mountain climber on The Price is Right, PLEASE DO NOT CALL to check if the baby is here. We promise, we will share the news as soon as we're home from the hospital - and we'll call our families as soon as the baby is born. Your concern is noted - but your calls and emails will do nothing but aggitate the very pregnant woman. Don't do that.

35 Weeks

This week's ticker: I'm a little less than 19 inches tall & all my organ systems are complete & being finalized.

How your baby's growing: Your baby's getting big. He weighs a tad over 5 pounds and is just over 18 inches long. Because it's so snug in your womb, he isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

34 Weeks

This week's ticker: I'm over 5 lbs & 18 inches long! My kidneys are fully developed & my liver is catching up!

How your baby's growing: Your baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds and is probably almost 18 inches long. Her fat layers — which she'll need to regulate her body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her rounder. Her central nervous system is still maturing and her lungs are well developed by now. If you've been nervous about going into preterm labor, you'll be happy to know that 99 percent of babies this age can survive outside the womb — and most have no major long-term problems related to prematurity.
